Featured Speakers

Ken Reeves
Ken is a graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara where he an all-conference soccer player. After coaching soccer at the high school and Division 1 NCAA level, he started coaching cross-country and track and field at Nordhoff High School in 1985. While there, his teams captured 14 CIF Southern Section titles and 11 California State titles. He has been involved with the LA84 Foundation’s cross-country coaches education program since its inception. Ken is a co-author for both the LA84 cross-country and track and field manuals. He has been the Ojai Valley Educator of the Year and was two-time National High School Coach of the Year.

Kevin Smith
Kevin is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles. After graduation, he worked as an assistant coach at El Modena High School (’83-’85) before being hired at Oak Park as a teacher and coach. Oak Park’s cross-country and track teams have since won 48 Tri-Valley League titles, 9 CIF Southern Section titles and 4 California State titles. Oak Park captured its first school CIF championship in 1988 when the boys’ track team won the 1A title. The 2002 cross-country team matched a rare feat in State history winning both the boys and girls’ titles in the same year. In 2003, the girls claimed their third straight title while the boys finished runner-up. In 2011, after securing the girls’ Division III track and field CIF title, Kevin stepped down. In 2012, Kevin began assisting the California Lutheran University track and field program working with athletes in the high jump and sprints. He continues to teach AP courses at Oak Park.

Bill Tokar
Bill is a graduate of Point Loma University where he was an Academic All American, conference champion in the 1500m, and competed in two national cross-country championships. He also has a master’s in human biomechanics from California State University, Northridge. In 1985 Bill began a 20 year tenure of coaching the cross-country and distance programs at Ventura High School. There, he coached a state champion in track and field and led the Ventura girls’ program to two California State championships. His teams also at one time held the Mt. Sac course record and the Division 1 team time record at the state meet course. Bill has been a lead instructor for LA84 since 1994.
